Nancie King Mertz was born and raised in central Illinois where she began painting and selling her work in her early teens. Nancie’s oils and pastels are Impressionistic in style, with 60% of her work created en Plein air. She is a Master Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and the Chicago Pastel Painters and was awarded the coveted Master Circle Medal from the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2015.
Mertz paints approximately 100 pieces annually in pastel or oil and has traveled to over 20 countries for inspiration to paint on-site. She came to China with the Linden Centre’s first Plein Air Painting tour in 2008. Urban & rural subjects capture her attention when traveling in the States, and she can often be found painting in the varied neighborhoods of Chicago. She offers destination workshops and local demos, and serves as a juror for shows in the Midwest.
She has twice been named “Chicago Artist of the Year” by the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau, and her work is featured on Chicago-based TV, such as “The Good Wife”, “Chicago Med”, “Chicago Fire” & “Empire”.
